Nickelback, the band that represents Alberta and all of Canada. The band emerged in the late 90s. Much of their singles failed to capture any attention. Then in 2001 they caught the eyes of many with, "How You Remind Me," they topped the charts in many countries. This got them four Grammy nominations and four Juno Awards and the beginning of their fame.
Nickleback has sold almost 50 million records, won junos and they play packed concerts but these boys can't find the respect of the public. It was announced they were playing at the 99th Grey Cup game in Vancouver and the Detroit Lions-Green Bay Packers game, this did not please many. Thousands of Detroit fans started a petition, asking why of all bands they chose such an awful one.
The band then decided to answer back to all the hate with a bit of humor. They made a video parody, poking fun at themselves, for being Canadian etc. In the video they had an image-improvement specialist trying to get to the bottom of why they were so hated. As much as I dislike the music played by Nickelback, I love when someone can poke fun at them-self. My respect goes up for the members of the band, it is bold to do what they did. For example a Canadian band "The Stereos," use a lot of auto-tune, which I don't like but one day the lead singer posted about it jokingly. The respect went up just as it has for Nickelback now.

Where will we get our Coffee now?!
Tim Hortons is a popular Canadian coffee shop, that many go to for donuts, coffee and breakfasts. For our Soldiers, it was decided we would open a Tim's in Kandahar Afghanistan. Over the 5 years it has been in Kandahar they served 2.5 million customers. Yet it is said now that it has been closed at the end of November. "It has been an absolute privilege and honour for Tim Hortons to be associated with the military and bring a little taste of home to the brave Canadian soldiers serving overseas," CEO Paul House said. Since the Canadian troops have started to withdraw from the camp near by the business wouldn't make as much money.
Since the beginning on Canada Day in 2006, the Tim Hortons has served four million cups of coffee, three million donuts and half a million iced cappuccinos and bagels. 230 Canadians have been employed at the store, which served customers from 37 different nations. "We are flattered that so many troops from different nations also made Tim Hortons a part of their everyday routine," House said. All of the location's proceeds went to military community and family support program, which was good for them.
I think it was wonderful there was a Tim's in Kandahar as the soldiers served there. I can understand it would make you feel like you were at home buying that class Tim's coffee. Everyday they got that little pick-me-up if they were feeling down. It is more so that the sentiment of having it there that is nice then just the coffee and food itself. I can't imagine being away from the Tim Hortons that is just a 5 min walk from my home. Most mornings its a pick-me-up before I have to get my bum to school. And my favourite thing to get is a Chocolate Chip Muffin with my coffee. Back to Kandahar, it is disappointing that it closed down but now that a mojority of the soldiers are back in Canada, it makes sense to close it down.

Why Granny's Struggle to Sleep
An elderly woman, Doris Birch, claims a poltergeist is haunting her! The poltergeist has yet to make a statement. The 73 year old former nursing home assistant says she can no longer sleep at night due to the ghost groping her.
Doris says: "It's like an octopus. It started four months ago. I was lying in bed when I felt this creepy pair of hands. I kicked frantically and it went away. Next time it came I hurled the duvet on to the floor! But the ghost keeps coming back. I've tried sleeping without the duvet. But it started shaking my mattress. I even threw the mattress off the bed and bought a new one but it has made no difference. I told my 16-year-old granddaughter and she was gobsmacked. She said I must be joking. People are going to think I am mad but it is as real as the day to me. I'm not lonely. I love living alone. But this is very creepy and is giving me the jitters. It's harassing me. I need to call in the Ghostbusters. I told the vicar and he said it is a lost spirit. What I want to know is, why has it got lost in my flat?"
A Medium couple was brought in for this crazy old granny. The husband and wife say that can get the ghost but "sometimes spirits need to be here." Ray and Beryl Herne, the spirit mediums in their mid 50s explain they can draw the ghost out and envelope it in a "vortex of light" and send it to the "other side."
I think this woman is just a tad bit crazy but that's okay. I hope this "ghost" stops bothering her though. I guess I do believe in spirits and ghosts but this is a little bit too crazy. I don't think they can affect us after they are on the other side but I believe they exist. I would like to think my loved ones that have passed away are still watching me but I don't like to think any would like to bother me. Once I released helium balloons for a loved one who passed away and as they floated upward they were in the shape of smile and I believe that was a sign from her that she was happy now. Now that is a ghostly experience I actually like.

Miracle Recovery of a Congresswoman
On Jan, 8th 2011, I was watching the news and saw a story about a Congresswoman named Gabrielle Giffords. She had been shot in the head by a man at a "Congress on Your Corner," meeting outside a supermarket in Tucson, Arizona. The shooter luckily did not kill Gabby but he did kill 6 others and injured 13 more. Gabby suffered a serious brain injury but her ambitious personality was not phased, she would get through this too.
Gabby Giffords was a successful woman in the world of politics, she was elected to the House of Representatives in 2007 for Arizona state and had been working hard at that ever since. She was an enthusiastic, ambitious and animated woman and still is. She was one of her own and a rising star in the democratic party until January 8th.
Gabby was in the news again, November 11th, 2011. But now about her amazing recovery! Her husband, Mark Kelly (astronaut) and her appeared in an interview with Dianne Sawyer on ABC. Mark Kelly revealed the home videos he had taken of her recovery in the hospital and he also wrote a book, "Gabby, a story of courage and hope". It is an amazing story, within weeks she was moving and responding to Mark. Within months she was able to sing along to songs and talk with few words. Read or watch more about her recovery with the links down below.
Gabby's story really hit me, it is so inspirational to see a woman come through so much and so fast! She has an optimism and courage of no one I have ever seen before. I am glad to see her as a Congresswoman, she is a role model for so many. Everyone should look at her and then back at themselves and think about what she has gone through and even with all that how happy and positive she is. Where we as everyday people will have a fit over the smallest things. I encourage people to be more like Gabby Giffords as she is truly and inspiration.
